Preview: NYCFC return to Yankee Stadium looking to build momentum against Chicago Fire

New York City FC return to MLS action at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night as they welcome Chicago Fire FC, looking to make it back-to-back wins to begin the second half of the 2026 season.

Pascal Jansen's side made an impressive return following the FIFA World Cup break with a victory away to Columbus Crew, a result the head coach hopes can provide the platform for a strong run towards the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's clash, Jansen praised his team's response after the mid-season break.

"We just wanted to get a good start after the break," Jansen said. "The message was very simple. We didn't finish as strongly as we would have liked before the break, but there's more to do going into the second part of the season."

One of the biggest positives from the win in Columbus was the debut of new signing Bénie Traoré, who slotted seamlessly into the attack. Jansen also highlighted the return of James Sands, who impressed after being deployed in defence despite initially being earmarked for midfield.

"Bénie did the things that we expected from him... he fits the profile the team needs. Jimmy brings intelligence to the back line, both in and out of possession."

NYCFC will now hope that form carries over to the Bronx as they face a Chicago Fire side eager to spoil the homecoming.

Another player looking to make an impact is forward Malachi Jones, whose return from a lengthy injury layoff has given him a fresh perspective.

"The biggest thing is not to take anything for granted," Jones said. "I'm thankful every time I get the opportunity to step on the field again."

With Yankee Stadium hosting its first NYCFC match since the World Cup break, Jones also called on supporters to create a hostile atmosphere.

"We need all the energy and all the vibes to make sure we defend our home. Our supporters are a huge part of our success."

Saturday's match marks an important opportunity for New York City FC to continue building momentum as the playoff race begins to intensify, with every point becoming increasingly valuable over the final months of the regular season.
