Gotham Held by Portland in Top-of-the-Table Clash
Gotham FC and Portland Thorns shared the points in a closely fought NWSL encounter at Sports Illustrated Stadium, as Jaedyn Shaw’s spectacular opener was cancelled out by Sophia Wilson from the penalty spot.
The hosts came into the contest sitting top of the NWSL table, seven points clear of both Portland and the Washington Spirit, knowing another victory would further strengthen their position at the summit.
It was a cagey opening in New Jersey, with neither side able to create much in the way of clear-cut opportunities. Gotham’s first real sight of goal arrived in the 22nd minute, when Jordynn Dudley delivered a cross from the right towards Sam Kerr. The Australian connected with a header, but couldn’t generate enough power to seriously trouble Portland goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.
At the other end, Ann-Katrin Berger was called into action on several occasions and produced a handful of important saves to keep the Thorns at bay, ensuring the two sides went into the half-time break goalless.
Gotham were handed a scare five minutes after the restart when Dudley was brought down by a hefty standing challenge from Jessie Fleming. The forward required treatment on the field, but after being assessed by the medical staff, she was given the all-clear to continue.
The hosts then went agonisingly close to finding the breakthrough in the 58th minute. Jaelin Howell picked out Kerr with an excellent ball over the top and into the Portland penalty area. Kerr directed her header on target, only for Arnold to produce a brilliant save to deny the Gotham striker.
Two minutes later, however, there was nothing the Portland goalkeeper could do.
From around 35 yards out, Jaedyn Shaw looked to send a cross into the penalty area, but her delivery instead continued towards goal. The ball sailed over Arnold and dropped into the net, sparking an eruption from the home crowd as Gotham broke the deadlock on the hour mark.
Gotham were forced into a change in the 69th minute, with Dudley unable to continue following her earlier knock. Denise O’Sullivan replaced her for just her third appearance in a Gotham shirt, marking another step in the midfielder’s return from a knee injury as she slotted into the midfield for the closing stages.
The complexion of the game changed again four minutes later.
Howell was penalised for a foul inside the Gotham penalty area, with the decision prompting loud protests from the home crowd. A VAR check followed, but the original call stood and Portland were awarded a penalty.
Sophia Wilson stepped up from 12 yards in the 75th minute and made no mistake. She sent Berger the wrong way before calmly placing her spot-kick into the bottom-right corner, bringing the Thorns level at 1–1.
Neither side could find a decisive second goal in the remaining minutes, leaving the points to be shared at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
The draw keeps Gotham at the top of the NWSL standings, while Portland move into second place for the time being, with Washington Spirit still to play on Sunday.
For Gotham, it was an opportunity missed to further extend their advantage at the summit, but Shaw’s moment of inspiration and another strong display from Berger ensured they took something from a competitive encounter with one of their closest challengers.
