Kerr the Difference as Gotham Overcome Early Scare Against Kansas City Current

Gotham FC strengthened their grip on top spot in the NWSL with a 2–1 victory over Kansas City Current at Sports Illustrated Stadium, recovering from conceding inside the opening 23 seconds to move seven points clear at the summit.

The evening could hardly have started worse for Gotham. With just 23 seconds on the clock, Croix Bethune charged down the left and spotted Amelia White making a run between the Gotham centre-backs. White's first touch carried her into the penalty area before she kept her composure, delicately dinking the ball over Ann-Katrin Berger and into the bottom-right corner to give Kansas City a stunning early lead.

Gotham responded well to the early setback and were level in the 13th minute. Jordynn Dudley whipped a free-kick into the penalty area from the right, and when Kansas City failed to clear their lines, Midge Purce reacted quickest to fire home and make it 1–1.

The biggest controversy of the first half arrived in the 27th minute when Kansas City's Elizabeth Ball was shown a straight red card after pushing Dudley to the floor. What initially looked set to leave the Current playing with 10 quickly became a lengthy VAR review.

After around five minutes, the referee was called to the pitchside monitor and ultimately overturned the red card. Ball was allowed back onto the field and Kansas City resumed with all 11 players, a decision greeted by loud boos from the Gotham crowd.

Gotham didn't allow the frustration to distract them, however, and completed the turnaround four minutes before half-time.

Jaedyn Shaw produced some quick feet down the left before pulling a low cross back into the six-yard box, where Sam Kerr was waiting. The Australian needed no second invitation, calmly tapping home from close range in the 41st minute to send Gotham into the break with a 2–1 advantage.

The hosts thought they had given themselves some breathing room 10 minutes into the second half.

Dudley twisted and turned inside the Kansas City penalty area before laying the ball back towards the edge of the box. Jaelin Howell arrived to meet it first time, caressing a beautifully placed effort into the far corner. It wasn't the most powerful of strikes, but the precision appeared to have made it 3–1.

The celebrations proved premature.

Just as the players were preparing for the restart, a possible offside in the build-up was sent for review. After another lengthy delay, the referee ruled in the 60th minute that Dudley had initially been in an offside position and the goal was chalked off, keeping Kansas City within touching distance at 2–1.

That left the game finely poised heading into its closing stages, although Gotham came agonisingly close to putting the contest beyond doubt in the 89th minute.

The ball dropped to Kerr at the back post, and after working it out from under her feet, she fired a left-footed effort towards goal. Kansas City goalkeeper Jordan produced an excellent reaction save, getting enough on the shot to parry it onto the post and deny Kerr her second of the night.

It proved to be the final major opportunity, with Gotham seeing out the remaining minutes to secure another important three points.

The victory moves Gotham onto 43 points from 20 matches and extends their advantage at the top of the NWSL table to seven points.

After surviving an extraordinary opening minute, a controversial VAR intervention and a disallowed goal of their own, Gotham ultimately found a way to get the job done. Purce provided the response, Kerr completed the turnaround, and another victory leaves the league leaders increasingly difficult to catch.
