Hudson River Honours Even as Jones and Cowell Shine in Derby Draw

The latest chapter of the Hudson River Derby delivered exactly what was expected: intensity, controversy, near misses and a share of the spoils in front of a fired-up New York crowd.

The Red Bulls flew out of the traps and looked the more dangerous side early on, with Cade Cowell tormenting NYCFC down the right flank. Twice in the opening stages he picked out Julian Hall with dangerous deliveries into the box, setting the tone for an aggressive start from the hosts.

Tensions simmered throughout a feisty first half, with several scuffles breaking out between the two rivals, a reminder that derby day in New York rarely lacks edge or emotion.

The Red Bulls’ best chance before the breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute. Captain Emil Forsberg spotted space behind the NYCFC back line and threaded a perfectly weighted pass through to Ronald Donkor, but the midfielder was denied brilliantly in a one-on-one situation by Matt Freese, whose save drew huge cheers from the travelling support.

A lengthy stoppage followed three minutes later when NYCFC talisman Maxi Moralez was stretchered off with injury. Andres Perea replaced the Argentine playmaker, ending an unfortunate night for the veteran who had registered three assists against the Red Bulls in their US Open Cup meeting earlier this season.

The breakthrough finally came just before half-time and once again Cade Cowell was at the heart of it. The winger burst down the right wing and drilled a low cross into the box. Julian Hall, under pressure from Raul Gustavo, scuffed his effort, but the loose ball fell kindly to Jorge Ruvalcaba who reacted quickest to slam home his fifth goal of the season.

The Red Bulls headed into the interval fully deserving of their lead after a dominant opening 45 minutes, with Cowell comfortably the most dangerous player on the pitch. NYCFC could count themselves fortunate to trail by only one.

Pascal Jansen made a change at the break, introducing Malachi Jones for Hannes Wolf, and the substitute made an immediate impact. Within moments of entering the action, Jones nearly curled a stunning effort into the top corner.

NYCFC’s equaliser came from a familiar source and a familiar area. Nico Fernandez whipped in a dangerous free-kick from the right-hand side and substitute Andres Perea glanced a clever header into the far corner beyond Ethan Horvath to level the derby.

Momentum had completely shifted.

Malachi Jones nearly turned the match around moments later after racing onto an overhit through ball. Horvath rushed from his line but failed to gather cleanly, allowing Jones an off-balance attempt that was dramatically cleared off the line.

Jones continued to torment the Red Bulls defence and was denied again in the 66th minute when Horvath produced another important save in a one-on-one situation.

NYCFC came inches away from taking the lead in the 73rd minute from yet another dangerous Nico Fernandez free-kick. Delivered from almost the identical position as the equaliser, the ball evaded everyone in the box before crashing off the far post, with the Red Bulls eventually scrambling clear.

The hosts responded with a set-piece chance of their own four minutes later. From a mirrored position on the opposite flank, Adri Mehmeti rose highest to meet the delivery, forcing an acrobatic save from Matt Freese.

But the clearest opportunities late on continued to fall to Malachi Jones.

In the 82nd minute, Nico Cavallo drove brilliantly down the left before cutting the ball into the box for Jones, whose first-time strike rattled the frame of the goal. Somehow, the winger still hadn’t scored.

Two minutes later NYCFC carved open the perfect counter attack. Jones fed Fernandez through the middle, and the playmaker slid the ball left to Augustin Ojeda, but the Argentine dragged his shot wide of the far post with the winner in sight.

In the end, neither side could land the decisive blow as honours ended even on Hudson River Derby Day.

The Red Bulls now turn their attention to a trip to Kansas City next Saturday, while NYCFC shift focus to the US Open Cup quarter-finals with a midweek visit to Columbus.
