Gotham FC Cruise to First Home Win with First-Half Blitz Over Bay FC

Gotham started the brighter of the two sides and took the lead in fortunate fashion in the 20th minute. A cross from Rose Lavelle caused problems for the Bay FC defence and, after a shot from Savannah McCaskill was initially saved by Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz, the visitors failed to clear their lines. An attempted clearance ricocheted off defender Karli Lema and into the net for an own goal — Gotham’s first home goal of the season.

Silkowitz required treatment after the goal, having been struck in the head by the ball as it crossed the line, but she was able to continue and was warmly applauded by the crowd in Harrison for her efforts.

Bay thought they had found an equaliser in the 28th minute when Lema found space on the right-hand side and drilled a low effort into the far corner, but the celebrations were cut short as the assistant referee raised the flag for offside.

Rose Lavelle almost doubled Gotham’s advantage in the 33rd minute, surging through the centre before attempting to curl an effort into the bottom-left corner from distance, but her shot drifted narrowly wide of the post.

The second goal finally arrived for the hosts in the 40th minute. Brilliant footwork from Jaedyn Shaw on the left saw her twist and turn past her marker Sydney Collins before squaring the ball to Lavelle, whose first-time finish was expertly placed into the bottom-right corner. Gotham were firmly in control.

There was still time for more first-half drama as Lavelle was brought down in the box deep into stoppage time. Up stepped Esther González, who rifled her penalty into the top corner in the sixth minute of added time to send Gotham into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half started much the same way, with Gotham on top and Shaw continuing to cause problems down the wing, creating further chances as Bay struggled to build any sustained pressure. There was another lengthy stoppage when Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger required treatment after a close-range effort from Bay’s Cristiana Girelli struck her in the face, though the experienced shot-stopper was able to continue.

Both sides traded chances in the closing stages, but the damage had already been done in the first half. Gotham saw out the match comfortably to secure their first home win of the season, while Bay FC slipped to a third defeat of the campaign.

It’s a strong statement performance from the reigning champions, with Juan Carlos Amorós’ side now turning their attention to a trip to Illinois on Wednesday to face Chicago.
